The Monterey Jazz Festival’s “Chair and Horn” logo was designed by local artist and graphic designer Coldie Whitman in 1958. The concept was developed from an idea that Jimmy Lyons had — to establish a jazz department at the nearby Monterey Peninsula College, endowed with a department chair position — so the idea of a “chair of jazz” was born.
“Coldie must have done a thousand sketches until he finally got the logo, which is the horn sitting on the old-fashioned ice cream store chair,” reminisced Lyons in 1978. “That to me denoted the chair of jazz.”
In what has become a Monterey tradition, every year, the stages of Monterey have been painted a different theme, all with the chair and horn featured in different renditions.
