The iconic 1958 Monterey Jazz Festival program cover was created by San Francisco’s Graphic Design Associates. The classic red and black expressionist woodcut style set the tone for many of the posters of the 1960s. The Festival featured stellar lineup, including Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Dave Brubeck, Dizzy Gillespie, Cal Tjader, Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Harry James, and many others. “Artistically, that first Festival was unstoppable. Probably the most creative lineup of talent and pure jazz information ever put together for a weekend. It made about $600,” MJF founder Jimmy Lyons told Ira Kamin in 1978.
